There are many ways to get involved in boating but is owning a boat the right decision for you? You can purchase a boat…but is it really worth it? For illustration purposes let’s say you pay $50,000 for a typical 24′ boat and over 5 years invest $80,000-$100,000 in your boat. At the end of 5 years the net value of your boat is about $15,000. That’s a big financial loss. Then, let’s say that you want to sell your boat…now you face some big obstacles. South Florida has a saturated used boat market & older boats typically don’t sell – even at wholesale. Most boaters know that a boat in this age category will probably need a lot of work. This estimate does not even account for your time.

With busy schedules boat ownership typically does not make a lot of sense. Most new boat owners overestimate how much time they will actually use their boat. And when something breaks – you have to fix it, pay for it and lose a day of fun on the water. Overall owing a boat is not an attractive investment.

Consider the alternative.

There is a reason why these popular boating quotes exist;

“a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into“.

or:

“For every hour you spend boating you will spend 2-3 hours cleaning, repairing, & maintaining your boat”.

or:

“The definition for the word BOAT is: Break Out Another Thousand”

Enjoy life, enjoy boating while not dealing with repairs, out drives, broken gauges, electrical shorts, getting rid of barnacles, waxing your gel coat regularly, repainting bottoms of boats, new manifolds & risers etc.

Let us worry about all of these things!
